Captain Share A Trader Tale from the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper Book 5 (Audible Audio Edition) Nathan Lowell Jeffrey Kafer Podium Publishing Books
I read the latest Ishmael Wang story while working on an offshore supply vessel off the coast of Malaysia, so believe me when I say that these books really capture the essence of a seaman's (or starman's) life.I struggle a bit to put them into the YA catagory, but I think that's where they belong. Yes, there is sex and violence in the books, but guess what- young "adults" deal with those topics every day, and have *DAMN* *FEW* good role models to guide them in dealing with those issues. The sex is not at all graphic, and Ishmael deals with it the way real people deal with it in real life- sometimes seriously, sometimes casually, sometimes well, sometimes not-so-well.
For a young person, there are some great lessons to be learned: how to work your way up the ladder through hard work, ambition, and creative thinking. Lessons in being a leader, having a solid work ethic, and in getting along with people who are not at all like you, but that you have to learn to work with.
You would think that the stories would be boring, without space battles and aliens. But, there ARE battles- the battles Ishmael Wang fights to accomplish his job, which is every bit as gripping as one with death rays. And some of the humans are far, far weirder than the aliens other authors have portrayed. Give these books a look.

Captain Share A Trader Tale from the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper Book 5 (Audible Audio Edition) Nathan Lowell Jeffrey Kafer Podium Publishing Books Reviews
My major issue with Mr Lowell's writing is that all the shipmates from Wang's different ships have the exact same sense of humor, so the interchanges repeat from one book to the next. I had high hopes at the start of this book that
Agamemnon's crew would be different people, but no, they talk just the same as the Lois's and Wang too often is the same person as he was earlier in the series too. The subplot around his wife Jen shows he's matured in some ways, but also shows he's the same unbelievable man, a man who never loses his temper, always knows what to say and believes the best of everyone. In short, too often he's a tedious saint. At least this volume spared us his much too practiced sexual adventures. . .
I read the first volume and liked it so much I bought all 5 books (so that ought to tell you something right there). over 4 days I read all 5 and found them delightful.
What appealed to is that it was more like a 1950's science fiction book....in hat there were hardly any cusswords, very little sex (and even then more of a wink-wink description), and almost no techno-babble. It was centered more around the main protagonist (Ismael Wang) and he's adventures as he advances in the "Star clipper' trading life. I assume the author told the tale so you could really feel the similarity to old time sailing ship stories. It worked well and I finished the series liking it very much.
(NO SPOILERS)
My only complaint (and why I took away a star) is I felt the ending rushed and trite. It was the 5th book and you get the feeling it was to close the ending. Again, a lot more inline with a "Golden Age of Science Fiction" story from Bova, Heinlien, or Azimov.....but he kind of does a rug jerk....I forgive him because you can just FEEL the 6th book out there waiting (HERE ME NATHAN?)...
Rip roaring story...well worth the cheap price of admission!! Go for it...
Although I am a huge fan of Nathan's Tanyth Fairport Series, I am even more ridiculously a fan of the Solar Clipper series. I was introduced to them via John Ward, the great collector of interesting people, who suggested the Quarter Share podcast to me. A couple years later, and not only have I thoroughly enjoyed devouring the entire series on a regular basis, but I've also roped my family into the fandom as well. I'm pretty sure my mother has listened to the first six books at least a score of times. I'm not kidding. My children have listened in rapt attention to Quarter Share at least five or six times. We use them as road trip entertainment. They're published in series of three, each trilogy focusing on a different phase of Ishmael Horatio Wang's life.
Captain's Share is MY favorite of this particular trilogy. Because not only does Ish affect great change, but the problems he resolves aren't systemic abuse. Which I think is the main problem I have with Double Share. Ish still makes a huge impact and changes the lives of many people. But those people would have at least been living still if Ish hadn't entered their lives. But the tragedy of the Chernyakova is introduced here, which sets us up for the third trilogy. The companion novel A Light in the Dark should be read after this.
